Description

A man robbed of his name and his dignity strives to win them back, and gain the freedom of his people, in this epic historical drama from director Ridley Scott. In the year 180, the death of emperor Marcus Aurelius (Richard Harris) throws the Roman Empire into chaos. Maximus (Russell Crowe) is one of the Roman army's most capable and trusted generals and a key advisor to the emperor. As Marcus' devious son Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix) ascends to the throne, Maximus is set to be executed. He escapes, but is captured by slave traders. Renamed Spaniard and forced to become a gladiator, Maximus must battle to the death with other men for the amusement of paying audiences. His battle skills serve him well, and he becomes one of the most famous and admired men to fight in the Colosseum. Determined to avenge himself against the man who took away his freedom and laid waste to his family, Maximus believes that he can use his fame and skill in the ring to avenge the loss of his family and former glory. As the gladiator begins to challenge his rule, Commodus decides to put his own fighting mettle to the test by squaring off with Maximus in a battle to the death. Gladiator also features Derek Jacobi, Connie Nielsen, Djimon Hounsou, and Oliver Reed, who died of a heart attack midway through production

This Is literally an option one the menu of the standard movie. One of my all time favorites, but this shouldn’t be sold separately, very deceptive.

You want us to rebuy the movie to get the extra 25 minutes? Then you don’t put it in 4K when the original version is? What are you thinking?
  • Where is the 4K DV?

The movie is 5 stars easily and while I don't know if I prefer the extended cut, the added scenes do add some depth (but also make for a bit less tight of a movie). But it's really puzzling that this extended edition is available on the Blu-Ray in 4K yet is not in iTunes. The work for 4K/HDR has already been done for it, except the encoding for iTunes. Are they working on this? Is it an oversight? So the 1 star is not for the content of this edition, just for the lack of the (already existing) 4K/HDR upgrade it deserves.
  • No 4K for Extended Version?

Unlike the original version this has not been upgraded to 4K and HDR.

While I love this movie, it's such a shame that it's a separate buy from the theatrical movie that also just had the 4K option added to it. Why doesn't this version have a 4K option, as well?

Simply put, this is a great movie... and this cut of the film makes the characters’ motivations throughout the film much more clear. While the theatrical cut focuses mainly on Maximus, in this cut, the roles of Lucia, Proximo, and the Emperor have been expanded. ——Spoilers ahead... Lucia’s motivation, where she plays both sides, but secretly fully supports overthrowing her brother is made clear from the beginning, when she has secret meetings with the senate, discussing how the Emperor was paying for the games by selling grain reserves, which would cause citizens of Rome to starve within a year. Several scenes expand Proximo’s role, showing his initial greed where he is tempted to bet against his own gladiators, and then when he realizes that Maximus could save Rome, he is still hesitant to take part in the plan for fear of being watched... Lastly, there are several added scenes with Emperor Commodus, showing how obsessive he is (when he learns Maximus is still alive, he enters the vaults and defaces a statue of his father), and a scene where he has two men executed shortly after that. He shows how insane he is by walking right in front of his archers after they had drawn... Ridley Scott knows how to put a good director’s cut together, and I would dare say that this is the version of the film that should have been released initially. Enjoy. As a side note: now we just need the Black Hawk Down Director’s Cut.

This is easily Russell Crowe's best performance. His performance as Maximus is absolutly fantastic. Ridley Scott does in this film what many others have tried and failed to replicate becasue the writing and the direction in the film is fantastic. It is easily one of the best films so far of the 21st Century and a MUST WATCH for any film fan.
